Charting Her Path

by Lisa Steinberg (source)

Q. Has your role on "The L Word" been your main focus or have you been working on other projects?

A. This time I just recently started a new band that I just started and I am excited about it and that’s what I am really concentrating on now.

Q. What can you tell us about the band and what made you want to start a new group?

A. Well I used to do music for a thousand years an I haven’t done it for four years since the show started. I have missed it a lot and I was waiting to meet the right people before I got back into it and that recently happened. I am in a band with two other girls, their names are Camilla Gray and Alicia Warrington. Camilla plays base and Alicia plays base and we’re called Uh Huh Her.

Q. Where did you get the name for the band?

A. We’re not saying but we just came up with it last week.

Q. Do you have any new artists for Marfa Records and what’s the goal for the label?

A. When I first thought of it I was inspired by Michelle Shocked called "Texas Campfire Tape." It’s an album recorded outside and it’s acoustic. You can hear the crickets around her and the cars driving by. I just always thought it was so magical because it really captured a moment in time. Instead of what we’re used to hearing, very produced bands. I thought it was an interesting concept to record artists like that. I did that with Amy Cook and I did that with other people. Right now there is not anyone signed.

Q. What’s new on "The L Word" this season for your character Alice?

A. This season they wrote Alice wanting to open up her world outside of the small group of friends she has. Expand her horizons with meeting and dating new people. I do that for pretty much half the season and eventually end up finding someone that becomes more serious.

Q. Is her expanding her horizons due to Dana’s death or is she just into moving on with people outside her circle of friends?

A. It’s something that Dana said to me, she wished I’d do that and not dwell on her death and stick to my own bubble.

Q. Did you think a lot of fans would be wary of season four because they were so unhappy over Dana’s death?

A. Oh sure! It’s hard for people to understand why that happened, just like it’s hard for me to understand why that happened. I’m sure they’re feeling exactly how I feel which is confused and upset. I mean I understand why they told the story, obviously that happens, that’s reality, some people die of cancer. It’s interesting to watch people go through that. I know fans are still upset about that, it’s hard to move on, I’m experiencing that myself.

Q. Where did you dig your emotions from for those scenes?

A. I was really feeling that, I was really feeling like I was losing Erin. She was leaving me, she was leaving us, it was very real to play.

Q. Do you think the show dealt with the way Dana had her cancer in a real way or do you think it was too short a period?

A. It was sudden, definitely quicker than anyone wanted to happen. It is not every case but I’m sure it does happen, that’s just the story that they wanted to tell.

Q. What is it about your role as Alice that really continues to challenge you?

A. I think it’s the constant search for Alice of finding her community, finding where she belongs, finding who she relates to. I think she’s on a constant journey to feel comfort and to feel okay in life. I think she’s always searching, always looking.

Q. The show has a lot of sex scenes, how do you tackle those?

A. Well, it’s a very professional situation. You’re with a large crew of people and you do it together. I think it’s just part of the job.

Q. Since season one Alice has been working hard on her chart. Are you aware of the new site OurChart.com and are you involved with it?

A. Yeah, I think it’s really, really clever and an amazing idea to take something totally fantasy and turning it into reality. It incorporates both sides of the character, it’s tacking it from both ends, I think it’s really clever. I am involved, it’s fun for me to be doing it. It’s going to be a really great place for people to log on to, it’s going to be like a lesbian Myspace. So, as soon as the chart part of it is up, it’s going to be really fun for people. All the content we’ll be putting up over the years will be something that nobody else will be able to do because we have access to things that no one else will. I get to be involved with whatever goes up on the site. We’re able to be really creative and bring in people we think is really talented.

Q. Will your band be your mainstay this year or will other projects be in the works?

A. No I am not settling on one thing, I am having a blast doing it. I am definitely going to be trying to do other things.

Q. What do you think it is about "The L Word" that really continues to draw viewers in?

A. I think people are invested in the characters at this point. They feel like they know them, they do know them, they know what they’re going through. We’re so close to our characters and they probably get a sense that we’re feeling what they’re feeling. For instance, Erin leaving the show, fans must know we’re upset as they are. So, they’re able to come back and feel a part of it like we are. I think people are very behind these characters and watching the development of these characters and interested in seeing where they are going.

Q. What would you like to say to all the fans and supporters of the show?

A. I would like to thank everyone for supporting the show even if they become frustrated, or even if they are not. I am really appreciative I am a part of something so unique and special. I thank them very much and hope they continue to do so.
